26/03/2007 - Thomas Telford Dock Refurbished
Amco have successfully completed the refurbishment of the esteemed St Katharine's Dock in Central London. The Dock, which is located immediately adjacent to Tower Bridge, provides some of the UK's most prestigious moorings.
The contract inspection necessitated replacing of one of the two 70 tonne lock gates at the Dock entrance. This was achieved by using a "tandem" lifting arrangement placed on temporary support beams spanning the lock entrance. The scheme also included the replacement of the greenheart sealing timbers and fenders, which are bolted to the gate skin plate. Detailed planning and stringent co-ordination of all the site activities ensured that disruption to access routes and marina navigation was kept to a minimum.
The original Dock was constructed by the respected engineer Thomas Telford in 1828, in what proved to be his only commission in the capital.
