Amco have recently completed the construction of 500 metres of 2.1 metre diameter tunnel as part of the Barrow Flood Relief Scheme. The purpose of the scheme was to remove 65 properties from the DG5 flood register.
The tunnel was driven from a 30metre deep storage shaft at Ramsden Square to a 15 metre deep reception shaft at Coronation Gardens and runs underneath Abbey Road in the centre of Barrow.
The tunnel was driven through ground conditions made up of interbedded glacial clay, sands and gravels all under a 5 metre head of water.
The Lovat Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine was christened "Driller Thriller" following a school competition which was won by David Allewell aged 11.
