Client:Network Rail

Location:Near Sheffield

Amco Rail has recently completed a programme of tunnel lining refurbishment works at Bradway Tunnel.  The tunnel which is approximately 2000 yards long and is over 140 years old is situated on the Midland Main Line between Sheffield and Chesterfield.

The time critical contract had to be delivered during a 13 week blockade which included the completion of the tunnel lining refurbishment work and the renewal of the track.

The tunnel had steadily deteriorated during its lifetime as a result of operational use and water penetration and the tunnel brickwork had been subject to regular repairs in order to maintain its integrity.  The latest programme of works was designed to adopt a much more proactive approach and ensure the longer term stabilisation of the tunnel lining.

The works undertaken included the installation of drainage ducts and pipes; drilling and compensation grouting behind the tunnel lining; the stabilisation and refurbishment of the tunnel lining using rock bolts, stainless steel fibre reinforcement and shotcreting and the cutting out and replacement of existing brickwork.
