Environmental Policy
We believe that everything we do affects the environment, as such we are committed to managing these activities that give rise to impacts upon the environment. The company management system has accredited certification from LRQA to ISO 14001: 1996. This is used as the cornerstone for continuous environmental improvement throughout the company. We measure our performance through audit and environmental indicators and use feedback to improve our methods of work.

We realise that our greatest environmental impact is likely to be during construction where our activities are often temporary and diverse, and the sites we work on environmentally sensitive. Compliance with environmental legislation and other environmental requirements, including those of our client is our minimum requirement and provides the foundation upon which we manage our activities.

We provide our staff with the skills and knowledge to identify, assess and manage the environmental and social issues associated with site work and ensure that when we engage sub-contractors, they are also aware of and have the resources to manage the environmental issues associated with the project.

For further information about AMCO's Management Systems or to obtain a copy of our current Environmental Policy, please contact Matthew Barker (Environmental and Quality Manager) at environment@amco-construction.co.uk.

Below is a selection of projects from our portfolio that demonstrate our commitment to the environment.

Stanley Mill (Environmental Consideration)

Protection of Otter resting place
This project embodies a high level of consideration for the environment, both with regard to the actual work sites and the surrounding natural environment. AMCO worked with the client to ensure all environmental aspects highlighted during the environmental impact assessment were addressed, in particular those relating to protected species.
Dunfermline Duplication Sewer (Environmental Monitoring)
The site monitors its environmental performance on a monthly basis to ensure that its activities continue to be managed effectively. This is supported by site visits from the company's Environmental Manager. Data from site visits is analysed by the Environmental Manager and used to build up a picture of any trends. This information is then fed back to staff through toolbox talks and poster campaigns.

Standedge Tunnel (Treatment of waste)
AMCO was involved in the de-silting of 15,000 cubic metres of canal silt, contaminated with heavy metals and hydrocarbons. This material had to be analysed and a suitable landfill site found for disposal. AMCO designed a waste treatment plant for the separation and de-watering of canal dredgings. AMCO was one of the first companies in Yorkshire to receive a mobile plant licence from the Environment Agency for treating canal dredgings (waste soil) and all water was returned to the canal under a discharge consent. The plant was operated by an AMCO Site Manager who had a WAMITAB certificate in technical competence. The de-watering operation reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill and thus the amount of traffic on the road.

Scout Tunnel (Bat Conservation)

Bat exclusion allowing bat egress but preventing ingress
All bats and their roost sites are protected by law, whether bats are resident or not. Bat roosts were found to exist within Scout tunnel. AMCO worked with the client and a consultant to preserve those crevices used by bats, by the alteration of the initial design from rock bolting and shotcreting to purely rock bolting. This measure preserved the rock crevices vital for roost access. The company's Environmental Manager has attended a professional bat survey course so that the potential for bat roosts can be identified early and specialists involved, where exclusions have to be put in place.
