Community Days Making an Impact at Beyond Boundaries Charity

An AmcoGiffen project team teamed up with colleagues from Network Rail recently to carry out some much-appreciated work for a charity near a project site.

The project team was carrying out essential repairs to a single-span underline bridge that required pre-cast concrete units lifting into place. The bridge, which belongs to Network Rail is on the Esk Valley line, it’s known as ‘Diving Duck’ and is situated close to a charity called Beyond Boundaries. The charity is based on a farm and provides a day service to adults and young people with differing learning abilities.

Due to the location of the work, we rented some land from the charity to create the site compound and offices. The area was being used as a car park for staff and volunteers as well as access to a goat enclosure, and pig pen.  To create space for the compound we built a new home for the Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs and helped move them into their new home.

As the project progressed so did the relationship between the project team and the charity. We organised a site visit for the charity team and participants, showing them our equipment and the work that we do, much to their enjoyment.

We were inspired by the charity and its participants so decided to offer our support by organising a community impact day together with our partners at Network Rail.

Working with the team we developed a plan to relocate a polytunnel and build some raised beds for planting. Day one of the work was completed in April, we were able to create a new area for the polytunnel, used recycled sleepers to build the beds and cleared the site of old farm equipment.

The project team and Network Rail colleagues returned recently for day two to construct the polytunnel in its new location. Despite some challenges in fixing the sheeting into place we managed to complete what we promised for the charity.

Our team is proud of what they’ve achieved and the friendships they’ve made at Beyond Boundaries and the charity visitors are looking forward to growing, tending and harvesting fruit and vegetables in their new raised beds and polytunnel.
